America had an interest in Cuba due to how close it was to the United States, but Spain refused to sell the island.

Cuban people revolted against the Spanish in an attempt to become independent, but were unsuccessful.

After the Spanish abolished slavery in Cuba in 1886 the United States began investing heavily in Cuban sugar plantations.
