These protein complexes utilise the energy produced in the transfer of the electrons in a redox reaction to pump protons to the outside of inner mitochondrial membrane. This creates a potential that can be utilised by ATP synthase in the phosphorylation of ADP to ATP in a process called chemiosmosis.
